These three are my personal favorites from Sant Kabir Das Ji. Seldom goes a week when I don’t find myself going back to at least one of them. Time to put it out on public! :P
What happened when Kabir met the teacher and the god?
I picked it up to host a Teacher’s Day assembly at my school back in 2008/9, I think. It stays with me even today so much so that I got it framed and sent it one of my mentors! :)
Kabir on company of learned people
I am still perplexed of how do I remember this from Hindi lessons in school. Maybe it is the meaning of this doha. It roughly translates as
“The company of learned people (sadhu) is like smell of a perfume maker. You may not take something home from him but being in their company leaves you with fragrance”
Kabir on true nature of man!
My idealist self remember being a bit offended when I read this in a Hindi class in childhood. Alas, only if one could still be that lame (as I was) after growing up.
Kabir on those who criticize
This is my favorite from Kabir. He asks you to keep the critics closer. So much so that give them a ‘kutiya’ to live in your own courtyard. Why? They help you ‘clean’ and improve yourself without either the soap or water.
If you find this good, I will urge you to support me as I bring more such perspectives to you.
