#27: 7 things Stories Worth Sharing taught me
Sharing quick notes from what I learnt to help you from my mistakes!
Picturize this: The year is 2017. Two boys found themselves directionless at 20. They found themselves unheard and wanted to speak, a lot. Out of energy and lacking desired motivation, they ask themselves: What to do?
Options: Live with this hollow feeling in the chest or speak.
Guess what did they pick? To speak! and how?
They started speaking to people in their city. And then to people of another city.. and another….. and one more…. and one more….
…..and slowly, they found themselves speaking to people in ~100 cities of India.
Oh but what did they speak about? The stories.
Their stories, your stories, stories of India, stories of Indians, stories of love, stories of emotion, stories of youth, stories of grief, stories of assault, stories of all, The Stories Worth Sharing!
In a previous post, I talked about Why I make people share their stories? I heard from a lot of people who wanted to hear more about my journey. Inspired by these mails, here’re some lessons I learnt from building my own company as a 20 something in India.
1. Persistence is underrated
We hosted at least one session per week for 102 weeks. Over the time, it became a habit; the best one!
2. You do not need (a lot of money) to startup!
How did we fund our community to 100+ cities? We did not spend money but invested our time. Albeit it cost us time, sleep, and a few relationships but it was worth it!
3. Success is about creating value
Nothing speaks of success more than people acknowledging it for you. We had people who met at our sessions and went on to get married, start businesses and do great things in life together.
4. Internet has it all that you need, learn to look at it in the right place(s)
This is what I even talked about in the very first TEDx that I have! Being able to find what you need online is an underrated skill!
5. You owe it to yourself!
Anything you have done in past, that you want to do, or will do in future: You owe it to yourself!
6. There is no time to envy
Ideas will be stolen, they will be challenged but what makes a difference is choice of not envying and/or wasting time in following what your competition is doing!
7. Value your people
Wanna go far? Build a classic, let them do their thing while you focus on making their lives easier. Value them and they’ll show you places you can’t even fathom!
If you are 20 something building a business or a community in India and need some help, I’ll love to offer a helping hand. Feel free to write to me! :D
If you liked these notes, I will urge you to support me as I bring more such perspectives to you.
